INDIANAPOLIS — After years of planning and months of construction, the new Native American Galleries will open to the public Saturday, June 25 at the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indian and Western Art.
The new Native American Galleries will allow visitors to Eiteljorg to experience Native American art in a fascinating way. They will host the exhibition Expressions of Life: Native Art in North America, featuring beautiful works created by Native artists from across the United States and Canada, including beadwork, jewelry, pottery, paintings, textiles, sculptures, glass and contemporary art.
The new galleries approach the presentation from an Indigenous perspective and are organized around themes of relationship, continuity and innovation, concepts shared by many Indigenous cultures. Gone are the bulky wooden display cases that displayed Aboriginal art as specimens; instead, all-glass display cases will provide a 360-degree view of the artwork. Audio descriptions for visitors with visual impairments, enhanced lighting, digital interactives and tactile samples will help make the exhibit more accessible and inclusive.
Expressions of Life: Native Art in North America, will remain permanently open during regular museum hours and days; it is included in regular admission to Eiteljorg. The Eiteljorg is located at 500 W. Washington St. and is open Monday through Saturday. 10am-5pm and Sun. 12pm-5pm Admission is $15 for adults, $12 for seniors, $8 for youth ages 5-17. Members are admitted free of charge.
