ST. CLOUD – A traveling exhibit on the history of the Native Americans of Minnesota is now open in St. Cloud.
The exhibition Why Treaties Matter: Self-Government in the Dakota and Ojibwe Nations launched at the Stearns History Museum on Tuesday.
The exhibit features 20 free-standing panels and a 14-minute video, all focusing on the effect of treaties and the role they continue to play in the life and relationships between Indigenous tribes and the people who settled here.
These treaties continue to hold in place nation-to-nation government and economic systems that maintain tribal sovereignty and help manage lands and resources.
Why treaties are important is a collaboration between the Minnesota Indian Affairs Council, the Minnesota Humanities Center and the National Museum of the American Indian at the Smithsonian Institution.
The exhibition will be on display at the museum until March 3. The cost is $ 7 for adults, $ 3 for children and free for museum members.
